چکیده

In the two-dimensional strip packing problem a number of rectangles have to be packed without rotation or overlap into a strip such that the height of the strip used is minimal. The width of the rectangles is bounded by 1 and the strip has width 1 and infinite height. We study the online version of this packing problem. In the online version the rectangles are given to the online algorithm one by one from a list, and the next rectangle is given as soon as the current rectangle is irrevocably placed into the strip. To evaluate the performance of an online algorithm we employ competitive analysis. For a list of rectangles L, the height of a strip used by online algorithm ALG and by the optimal solution is denoted by ALG(L) and OPT(L), respectively. The optimal solution is not restricted in any way by the ordering of the rectangles in the list. Competitive analysis measures the absolute worst-case performance of online algorithm ALG by its competitive ratio

A Comparative Study of Exact Algorithms for the Two Dimensional Strip Packing Problem

In this paper we consider a two dimensional strip packing problem. The problem consists of packing a set of rectangular items in one strip of width W and infinite height. They must be packed without overlapping, parallel to the edge of the strip and we assume that the items are oriented, i.e. they cannot be rotated. To solve this problem, we use three exact methods: a branch and bound method, a...

A note on the lower bound for online strip packing

This note presents a lower bound of 3/2+ √ 33/6 ≈ 2.457 on the competitive ratio for online strip packing. The instance construction we use to obtain the lower bound was first coined by Brown, Baker and Katseff [2]. Recently this instance construction is used to improve the lower bound in computer aided proofs. We derive the best possible lower bound that can be obtained with this instance cons...

Strip Packing vs. Bin Packing

In this paper we establish a general algorithmic framework between bin packing and strip packing, with which we achieve the same asymptotic bounds by applying bin packing algorithms to strip packing. More precisely we obtain the following results: (1) Any offline bin packing algorithm can be applied to strip packing maintaining the same asymptotic worst-case ratio. Thus using FFD (MFFD) as a su...

A tight Analysis of Brown-Baker-Katseff Sequences for Online Strip Packing

We study certain adversary sequences for online strip packing which were first designed and investigated by Brown, Baker and Katseff (Acta Inform. 18:207– 225) and determine the optimal competitive ratio for packing such Brown-BakerKatseff sequences online. As a byproduct of our result, we get a new lower bound of ρ ≥ 3/2 +√33/6 ≈ 2.457 for the competitive ratio of online strip packing.

An Improved Lower Bound for a Semi-on-line Bin Packing Problem

On-line algorithms have been extensively studied for the onedimensional bin packing problem. Semi-online property relax the online prescription in such a way that it allows some extra operations or the algorithm knows more (e.g. the optimum value) in advance. In this paper we present an improved lower bound for the asymptotic competitive ratio of any on-line bin packing algorithm which knows th...
